Distinguished Nigerian academic, theatre scholar, gender studies advocate

Prof. Charity Ashimem Angya is a highly distinguished Nigerian academic, theatre scholar, gender studies advocate, and university administrator who has left an indelible mark on Nigerian academia. Born on January 5, 1963, in Gboko, Benue State, her academic journey began at NKST Primary School and Bristow Secondary School in her hometown. She went on to earn a Bachelor's degree from the University of Jos in 1983, followed by a Master's and a Ph.D. in Theatre Arts from the prestigious University of Ibadan.

Her academic career commenced as a lecturer at the University of Calabar before she joined Benue State University, Makurdi. At Benue State University, she steadily rose through the ranks to become a Professor of Theatre Arts and Literary Theory, demonstrating exceptional leadership across several key administrative roles. Throughout her time at the institution, she served as the Head of the Department of Theatre Arts, Dean of the Faculty of Arts, and Director of the Centre for Gender Studies.

In November 2010, Professor Angya achieved a historic milestone by becoming the first female Vice-Chancellor of Benue State University, a position she held with distinction until 2015. Her transformative tenure was marked by significant academic and infrastructural expansion. Most notably, she secured the long-awaited accreditation for the College of Health Sciences, which paved the way for the institution's first set of medical doctors to graduate. She also established the Faculty of Environmental Sciences, cementing her legacy as a visionary institutional leader.

Beyond her administrative achievements, Professor Angya is an accomplished author, researcher, and advocate whose work centers on African drama, literary criticism, gender studies, and social development. Her written works include The Cycle of the Moon and Other Plays, published in 2000, and Perspectives on Violence Against Women in Nigeria, published in 2005. She has also channeled her expertise into active professional and social contributions, playing a key role in organizations such as the National Association of Women Academics, the Society of Nigerian Theatre Artists, and various leadership development initiatives.

In her personal life, Professor Angya is married to Paul Angya, and they are blessed with children. Today, she is widely celebrated as one of Benue State's most accomplished female intellectuals and administrators. Her pioneering leadership as Vice-Chancellor, alongside her enduring contributions to higher education and gender advocacy, makes her one of the most influential and respected figures in modern Nigerian academia.
