Early Life and Academic Background

Born on April 23, 1961, in the Guma Local Government Area of Benue State, Samuel Ortom began his educational journey at St. John's Primary School in Gboko before moving to St. Catherine's Primary School in Makurdi. Although his secondary education at Idah Secondary Commercial College in Kogi State faced interruptions, his determination to learn led him to pursue further education through correspondence and part-time studies. He eventually earned advanced qualifications from Ahmadu Bello University and Benue State University, ultimately obtaining a Master's degree in Public Administration.

A Distinguished Political Career

Ortom’s political trajectory spans several decades and encompasses a wide range of leadership roles across multiple political platforms. In the earlier years of his career, he served as the State Publicity Secretary of the National Centre Party of Nigeria, the State Treasurer of the All People's Party, and both the State Secretary and Deputy Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party.

His administrative capacity gained national recognition in 2011 when President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan appointed him as the Minister of State for Industry, Trade and Investment. During this period, he also briefly served as the Supervising Minister of Aviation in 2014. Returning to state politics, Ortom contested and won the Benue State gubernatorial election in 2015 under the All Progressives Congress. He later defected back to the Peoples Democratic Party, securing a second term in 2019 and successfully completing his eight-year tenure in 2023.
