Professor Ode Ojowu, OFR, stands as one of Benue State’s most brilliant economic minds and a towering figure in Nigerian public policy. Born in the agrarian landscape of Oju, he rose through sheer academic excellence, earning a First-Class Honours degree in Economics from Ahmadu Bello University before obtaining his doctorate from the University of Connecticut. He seamlessly bridges the gap between complex macroeconomic theory and local, grassroots development. While his intellectual footprints are visible across the highest levels of national governance having served as the Chief Economic Adviser to President Olusegun Obasanjo and Chief Executive of the National Planning Commission, his foundational and lifelong contributions to Benue State remain a core part of his legacy.

His direct impact on Benue State began in the mid-1980s when he was appointed Commissioner for Finance and Economic Planning. During a challenging fiscal era under military administration, his sharp reformatory approach drastically reshaped the state's financial landscape. By instilling structural adjustments and rigorous fiscal discipline, his administration achieved a legendary feat by quadrupling the state’s internally generated revenue within just a four-month window. This rapid economic stabilization provided Benue with the crucial financial buffer needed to fund critical infrastructure and local development projects during a pivotal time in its history.

Beyond fiscal management, Professor Ojowu has been an invaluable pillar of higher education within the state. Believing that sustainable development starts with intellectual growth, he took a sabbatical to teach and mentor students at Benue State University in the early 2000s. His commitment to the institution evolved into a long-term administrative legacy when he served as the Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of the Governing Council for the university from 2008 to 2016. 

Under his policy leadership, the university experienced strategic growth and enhanced academic direction, ensuring that the state could continue to cultivate its own future leaders and professionals.
