Executive Governor of Benue State
Rev. Fr. Dr. Hyacinth Iormem Alia is an accomplished cleric, academic, and statesman serving as the Executive Governor of Benue State, Nigeria. Emerging from a distinguished background in theology, healthcare administration, and biomedical ethics, Governor Alia represents a unique blend of compassionate leadership and structured governance, dedicated to unlocking the vast potential of Benue State.
Governor Alia’s leadership foundation is rooted in rigorous academic scholarship and professional training spanning Nigeria and the United States:
Theological Foundation: He completed his foundational studies at St. Augustine’s Major Seminary in Jos, obtaining a Bachelor of Arts in Sacred Theology in 1990, the same year he was ordained into the Catholic priesthood.
Advanced Post-Graduate Studies: Driven by a commitment to human development, he earned a Master’s degree in Religious Education, specializing in Psychology and Counseling, from Fordham University, New York, in 1999.
Specialized Expertise: He further advanced his academic portfolio at Duquesne University in Pennsylvania, obtaining both a Master’s degree and a Doctorate in Biomedical Ethics (2004/2005).
Prior to his transition into public governance, Dr. Alia dedicated over three decades to pastoral care and healthcare administration. In Nigeria, his ministry was defined by a profound closeness to the people, where his widely attended community initiatives brought hope and healing to countless families.
On the international stage, he brought his expertise in biomedical ethics to the healthcare sector, serving with distinction as the Director of Pastoral Services at Catholic Health Services in Florida, USA. His transition to public office in 2022 was driven by a vision to scale this impact, stepping forward to lead Benue State under the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC).
