The Most Reverend William Amove Avenya is an eminent Nigerian Roman Catholic prelate and a transformative spiritual leader. Appointed by Pope Benedict XVI, he stands as the historic pioneer Bishop of the Catholic Diocese of Gboko in Benue State. Over a distinguished career spanning more than four decades, Bishop Avenya has earned widespread reverence as one of North-Central Nigeria’s most influential religious voices, recognized equally for his pastoral wisdom, administrative excellence, and fearless advocacy for peace and human dignity.

Early Life and Academic Foundations

Bishop Avenya’s journey of faith began in the heart of Benue State, where he was born on June 21, 1955, in Uganmbe, Shangev-Tiev, within the Konshisha Local Government Area. His early calling to the priesthood took him through foundational education at St. Michael's Primary School in Bature and St. Patrick's Primary School in Taraku, followed by secondary studies at Mount St. Gabriel's Secondary School in Makurdi. He then entered St. Augustine's Major Seminary in Jos, where he underwent rigorous philosophical and theological formation between 1975 and 1981.

Believing that effective modern ministry requires robust institutional leadership, Bishop Avenya later expanded his horizons globally. He pursued advanced studies at the University of Manchester in the United Kingdom and acquired specialized training in management and development at the Galilee International Management Institute in Israel, blending deep spiritual devotion with sophisticated administrative expertise.

A Lifelong Journey of Ministry and Leadership

Bishop Avenya was ordained to the priesthood on May 30, 1981, embarking on a pastoral path that would see him take on progressively vital roles within the Church. His administrative acumen and pastoral heart led to his appointment as the Auxiliary Bishop of the Archdiocese of Makurdi in 2008, followed by his formal episcopal consecration on January 24, 2009.

A historic turning point occurred on December 29, 2012, when Pope Benedict XVI erected the Catholic Diocese of Gboko and chose Bishop Avenya to be its very first shepherd. He was formally installed on February 24, 2013, anchoring the new diocese with stability and vision. Later, his reliable governance was called upon once more when he successfully served as the Apostolic Administrator of the neighboring Diocese of Katsina-Ala from 2020 to 2022.
