Rev. Fr. Moses Orshio Adasu

Very Reverend Father Moses Orshio Adasu (12 June 1945 – 20 November 2005) stands as one of Nigeria’s most iconic historical figures, seamlessly blending the roles of brilliant academic, deeply revered Catholic priest, and the second democratically elected Executive Governor of Benue State. Guided by his profound philosophy to "baptise politics and make it pure," Fr. Adasu challenged conventional norms, proving that spiritual integrity could be fused with visionary civil leadership to drive systemic transformation.

Fr. Adasu’s journey was built upon a rigorous foundation of faith, intellect, and public service. Following his sacred ordination in December 1971 as part of the second cohort of indigenous Tiv priests in the Catholic Diocese of Makurdi, he pursued extensive higher education abroad. He earned an M.A. from St. John's University in New York and a Master of Religious Education from the Catholic University of America in Washington, D.C. Prior to his gubernatorial tenure, he served with distinction as the Senior Inspector of Education for the Benue State Ministry of Education, Dean of the Makurdi Deanery, and Vicar-General of the Makurdi Diocese.

Elected on the platform of the Social Democratic Party, Fr. Adasu assumed office as Executive Governor on January 2, 1992. Though his administration was prematurely truncated after less than two years by a military coup in November 1993, his brief tenure yielded a lifetime of monumental achievements that permanently reshaped the infrastructure and identity of Benue State. Following the return to democracy, he continued to champion accountability, serving as a member of the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission in 2001.

Fr. Adasu’s governance was defined by forward-thinking industrialization and an unwavering commitment to human capital development. His most monumental legacy remains the founding of Benue State University, Makurdi, in December 1991, which opened doors of higher learning to generations of youth and has since proudly been renamed the Rev. Fr. Moses Orshio Adasu University in his honor. In July 1992, he also conceptualized and launched the iconic Tarka Foundation, named after Senator Joseph Sarwuan Tarka, to preserve cultural heritage and foster community engagement. Furthermore, he catalyzed local economies by upgrading the College of Education in Oju and initiating key state enterprises, including the BENCO roof tile factory and the Katsina-Ala fruit juice processing company.

Fr. Adasu remains an eternal symbol of ethical leadership, remembered not just as a politician, but as a pioneering statesman who leveraged the power of governance to uplift his people and set a timeless standard for public service.
